A Nigerian tale as a tool for education and advocacy

As part of the activities marking Nigeria’s independence, Nigerian storyteller Bola Stephen shared her world and culture with LFLP Terminale students through a project by the CDI and Mme Abdi-Ali.

She explained the importance of storytelling in Nigerian culture, before raising the world’s most pressing issues with the students. The tale she then told about the forest animals who had to elect a king, was a metaphor for the world’s problems, and their possible solutions. She emphasized the importance of everyone working together to solve people’s current problems.

Singing, dancing and laughter punctuated this moment of exchange and reflection, which the students thoroughly enjoyed. Ms. Stephen showed that storytelling is an important means of transmitting a people’s culture and values. They can also be used to enrich students’ education.
